Small-Business Group Health Insurance

Group health, dental and vision options for small Ohio employers, plus help comparing a traditional group plan with alternatives such as an individual coverage HRA (ICHRA) or QSEHRA.

How small-business group health insurance works

Offering health coverage helps small businesses hire and keep good people, but the options can be confusing. We compare small-group plans from several insurers, explain employer contribution and participation requirements, and look at alternatives where you reimburse employees for individual coverage through an ICHRA or QSEHRA. We help with setup and with employee enrollment questions. Tax treatment of health benefits depends on your business structure, so we coordinate with your accountant.

Working with small employers in the Dayton area and across Ohio.

Good to know in Ohio

  • Ohio residents buy individual and family plans through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Plans and prices vary by county.
  • Open Enrollment runs November 1 to January 15. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1.
  • Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, moving, marriage or a new baby opens a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Marketplace premiums are the same with or without an agent. Insurance companies pay the agent.

Common questions

How many employees do I need for a group plan?

Many Ohio small-group plans start at two enrolled employees, one of whom is not the owner or spouse, but rules vary by insurer. We confirm the requirements for your situation.

What is an ICHRA?

An individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement lets an employer reimburse employees, tax-free when set up correctly, for individual health insurance they buy themselves. It can make costs more predictable than a group plan.
